Habits
|
by Mary Bigler Quote
"If
you create an act, you create a habit.
If
you create a habit, you create a character.
If
your create a character, you create a destiny."
They
create your destiny.
Here
we are into the second calendar month already.
How
was January for you?
A.
Great! You set some new goals and are on a steady course,
making progress.
B.
OK. Not quite in the swing of your New Year's resolutions
yet but you have plenty of time.
C.
You already gave up on the resolutions.
D.
What resoultions?
If
you want off the same old stuff/autopilot setting, you have
to first decide something is worth the effort it will
take to change it.
Once
you firmly decide, you have to act.
You
are what you repeatedly do, so choose actions thoughtfully.
Act
consistently, LONG enough to make the new behavior a habit
or until you realize it's time to change course because
the timing or strategy wasn't quite right.
We've
all heard it takes at least 21 days, often longer, to instill
an new behavior.
What
you might not realize is that new neurological connections
(brain function) must be formed to replace the old, familiar
circuitry deeply carved by 'old', now automatic habits.
This
takes time, not will-power.
How
much depends on how much time you devote to practice (consistency) and
how invested you are in the result.
You
might have heard the familiar football slogan
'Who
wants it more?'.
How
much do you want it?
Like
a well-worn bike path, a new trail must be blazed elsewhere
if you want to erase the traces of the old one. Soon,
the new trail (habit) will become well-worn and the
old one fades with each passing day.
What
new trails are you wanting to blaze?
I'd
like to offer a few popular tools many have used to successully
instill a new habit that was critical to reaching an important
goal.
Thoughtfully
review the list, try them on, then choose ONE strategy (or
create one of your own) and fully commit to Being/Doing
it for at least the next 21 days.
